The Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme is a framework for educational success for students approximately 11 - 14 years old.

What are the subjects in the IGCSE curriculum?
There are five Subject Groups in IGCSE with several subjects to choose from, in each group:

• Group 3: Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc)

What is the International Certificate of Education (ICE) that is awarded to some IGCSE students?
The ICE is more prestigious than the standard IGCSE. Instead of the five papers needed to obtain the IGCSE, if a student attempts and passes seven or more papers, s/he is awarded the ICE. The seven subjects must be as follows:

• One from each of the other four groups
• One more from any of the five groups

What is “A” Level ?

‘A’ level is a two year programme after x th std. conducted by the university of Cambridge UK. “A” level is one of the most recognized qualifications around the world. It is accepted as a proof of academic ability for entry into universities, institute of higher education and military schools, and is equally important for young people moving into employment. These exams are highly specialized and comprise of only three subjects. International ‘A’ level is a “gold standard” qualification. It has exactly the same value in admitting students to Universities as the U.K. equivalent and is accepted as an entry level qualification by Universities world wide.
It offers flexibility of going abroad to the desired college and studying further in India as well.”A” level examination is equivalent to the XII std examination and is recognized by any board in India and hence the students can appear for any of the competitive examinations.

ICSE CURRICULUM

Language pattern:

All schools affiliated to the Indian council for Secondary Education (ICSE) need to follow a three- language formula. The medium of instruction is English. Initially the emphasis is laid on developing oral language skills of the child and later on other skills like listening, reading and writing are integrated into the curriculum. English being the I- Language is introduced in class I along with the Second language and III Language is introduced in class V. The school emphasizes on activity based instruction.

The ICSE board is unique from the point of view of its functionality, curriculum, abilities and standards. Governed by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), a non-government, private board for school education in India, ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) is an examination conducted for Grade X and ISC (Indian School Certificate) for Grade XII.

• ICSE focuses on the child’s overall growth and has a balanced syllabus.
• The syllabus is more comprehensive, structured and aims to give practical knowledge and build analytical skills in students.

ABOUT THE COUNCIL

The Council has been so constituted as to secure suitable representation of: Government of India, State Governments/Union Territories in which there are Schools affiliated to the Council, the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education, the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Heads of Anglo-Indian Schools, the Indian Public Schools’ Conference, the Association of Schools for the ISC Examination and members co-opted by the Executive Committee of the Council.

EARLY BEGINNINGS

In 1952, an All India Certificate Examinations Conference was held under the Chairmanship of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Minister for Education. The main purpose of the Conference was to consider the replacement of the overseas Cambridge School Certificate Examination by an All India Examination. This set the agenda for the establishment of the Council.

In October 1956 at the meeting of the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education, a proposal was adopted for the setting up of an Indian Council to administer the University of Cambridge, Local Examinations Syndicate's Examination in India and, to advise the Syndicate on the best way to adapt its examination to the needs of the country. The inaugural meeting of the Council was held on 3rd November, 1958. In December 1967, the Council was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1973, the Council was listed in the Delhi School Education Act 1973, as a body conducting "public" examinations.

Origin
1. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations was established in 1958 by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate with the assistance of the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education. It is registered under the Societies Registration Act No. XXI of 1860

Recognition
2. The Delhi Education Act, 1973, passed by Parliament, in Chapter 1 under Definitions Section 2 (s), recognizes the Council as a body conducting public examinations.

Constituents
3. The Council has been so constituted to secure suitable representation of: The Government of India, responsible for affiliated schools in their States/Territories - the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education, the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Heads of Anglo-Indian Schools, the Indian Public Schools’ Conference, the Association of Schools for the I.S.C. Examinations and members co-opted by the Executive Committee of the Council.

Administration
4. The Council is administered by an Executive Committee consisting of the Chairman and four members. The Chief Executive and Secretary of the Council is ex-officio Secretary of the Committee.

5. The Chief Executive and Secretary acts as Secretary to the Council under the authority of the Chairman. Subject to the overall control of the Council and the Executive Committee, the Chief Executive and Secretary exercises all powers of the Council related to the administration of the examinations in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations and of other rules and procedures approved by the Council from time to time.

Examinations
6. The Council conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, the Indian School Certificate and the Certificate of Vocational Education Examinations.

7. There is a Committee on Examinations and Subject Committees for drawing up and revising syllabuses and receiving criticisms and suggestions. The Council has its own teams of trained examiners, specialists and advisers.

Subjects

The subjects that are offered are divided into three groups.
1. Group I includes Compulsory Subjects — English, History, Civics & Geography, and Indian Language.

2. Group II which includes any two from Mathematics, Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry) as separate subjects, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Agricultural Science, Commercial Studies, Technical Drawing, A Modern Foreign Language, A Classical Language and Economics.

3. Group III has any one from Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Commercial Applications, Art, Performing Arts, Home Science, Cookery, Fashion Designing, Physical Education, Technical Drawing Applications, Yoga, and Environmental Applications.

4. All subjects have components of internal assessment that are carried out by schools, on the basis of assignments/project work, practicals and coursework. There is 20% weightage for internal assessment in group I and II and 50% weightage for group III.

5. In subjects where there are more than one paper (e.g., Science), the marks obtained in the subject are calculated by taking the average of all the papers in the subject. Candidates appearing for the examination have to study six subjects, with one to three papers in each subject. For subject HC&G the paper 1 consists of History & Civics and paper 2 consists of Geography, Science consists of three papers each for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
